Happy 🌎 Day! Is Your ECommerce Store Sustainable?
How to conduct a sustainablity audit for eCommerce stores
Happy Earth Day! Did you know that April 22nd has marked Earth Day since 1970? To mark the 55th anniversary of this holiday, Fyresite has compiled information to help you run a sustainability audit on your store.
How to Run a Sustainability Audit
It’s always important to establish a baseline of your current sustainability. There’s no standard for what must be included in a sustainability audit, but you can run your own using these steps below.
1️⃣ Determine Current Sustainability Practices
Do you use a carbon neutral or negative shipping process? Do you use recyclable materials when you pack?
Are your products made from recycled materials? Do you have a sustainable supply chain?
Are you using optimal shipping strategies? Do you repair or resell returned items?
By answering questions like these, you’re able to establish where your business is in terms of sustainability, and areas that you may want to improve on.
2️⃣ Determine What You Want to Improve
There are many ways that a business can be more sustainable. Now that you know where your current practices are, you can look into areas that you want to improve.
This can be shipping, supply chains, return policies, or anything that you established was a weak spot in your current practices. It’s up to you and what works within your business.
3️⃣ Set SMART Goals
After establishing what you want to improve, you can set goals for it. These goals should be SMART goals - specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.
Here are some examples of sustainability smart goals.
Google is aiming to achieve net-zero and 24/7 carbon free energy by 2030
Amazon is committing to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040
Shopify plans to invest over $100 million in permanent carbon removal by 2030
Nike plans to reduce their carbon footprint by 63% by 2023, and reach net-zero by 2050
Microsoft pledged to be carbon negative by 2030 and remove all the carbon that they have emitted either directly or by electrical consumption by 2050
4️⃣ Reassess as Needed
As you would for any audit you conduct, it’s important to reassess and reaudit your sustainability practices as you need.
